Fine Art Paintings by
Tom Alway

Tom Alway was born in Massachusetts and grew up in rural New Hampshire. He attended the University of New Hampshire, where he received a BA, was a summer student studying 18th century political philosophy at Edinburgh University, Scotland. He came to Canada to attend graduate school at York University in Toronto, and received his Master of Arts Degree in Political Science.

Tom moved directly from his studies in academia into the theatre. His first professional job was with the Stratford Festival as an actor, appearing in several productions at the Festival's Avon Theatre from 1969-1972. These productions included a US national tour with Hume Cronyn in Hadrian VII, and a Broadway production of There's One in Every Marriage, a co-production of the Festival with David Merrick Productions. For the first few years of his career as an actor, Tom performed in productions in theatres across Canada. His next career move was to become a theatre stage manager, production manager and a company manager. He finally settled into a career in 1985 as a set decorator in television and film production both in Toronto and later in Halifax.

In 1997, Tom moved to Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, birthplace of his paternal grandmother, and also acquired Canadian citizenship. Partnering with artist, Peter Blais, he established the Maritime Painted Saltbox Fine Art Gallery in Mahone Bay.
In 2005, The Maritime Painted Saltbox Fine Art Gallery moved into a converted barn in Petite Riviere, Lunenburg County. The gallery celebrates its 18th year in 2016 as an artist
owned and operated gallery. It continues to feature entirely the studio work of Tom Alway and Peter Blais. The Gallery has become a gem and a must see destination on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. The gallery is known for it colourful art, fun atmosphere and general visitor joie de vivre.

As an artist, Tom draws his inspiration from the landscape around him. He paints realistically exploring the play of light and shade, sometimes with a surrealistic bent. He paints to give a sense of what is in front of the canvas, drawing the viewer into the picture. He paints in acrylics and has begun to use other media (e.g. modelling paste) to provide texture to paintings. He has created several series of pictures, one featuring windows and another foundations. And just for something different Tom has begun painting what he calls fun art.

Tom was a requested artist in the New Faces Art Exhibit held at the Art Sales And Rental Gallery (now the Teichert Gallery) in Halifax in 2001 and in Streetscapes in October of that year. In March 2002, he was asked to exhibit two new works for the Society's Corporate Reception. He continues to consign his work to the gallery and participates in the Annual Group Show each year.

Tom has had two shows as Featured Artist at the Art Sales And Rental Gallery, one titled Panes And Sills (2009) . And in 2012 he was again the Featured Artist with a solo show of ten paintings titled Sea Debris. His paintings hang in private collections in Canada, Australia, Switzerland, Germany and the United States. He has published his work in a book titled Panes And Sills, available from www.blurb.com . For many years he was participant in Studio Rally and in the Nova Scotia Art & Craft Guide.
